Dehradun to Auli: the route

Auli is about 280 km from Dehradun and takes around 9 hours of driving — almost all of it on hill roads. The route follows the Ganga and Alaknanda valleys from Rishikesh through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Chamoli to Joshimath, and then climbs the last stretch to Auli. It is one of the most demanding drives in Uttarakhand, and the reason families bring a hill-trained driver for their own car.

LegApprox. timeNotes
Dehradun → Rishikesh1–1.5 hrsLeave by 5:30–6 am
Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar3 hrsRiver valley road; breakfast stop
Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Chamoli2.5–3 hrsWatch for slide-prone sections after rain
Chamoli → Joshimath → Auli2 hrsFinal climb; snow in winter

Many travellers break the journey for a night in Rudraprayag or Joshimath rather than driving it in one stretch — it is safer and the views are better in daylight.

What it costs with a driver

  • Driver per day: ₹1,499 on hill routes, in your own car.
  • Night stay: ₹300 per night, or you arrange his stay.
  • Fuel, toll and parking are yours. Fill up in Rishikesh or Srinagar; fuel stations are fewer above Chamoli.

Best season and car tips

December–March is the snow season for skiing; expect cold mornings, frozen patches and chain use. April–June brings clear views of the peaks and comfortable driving. July–September is the riskiest period because of landslides. Before the trip, check tyres, brakes and coolant — see our checklist before a hill trip.
